Action painting or “gestural abstraction” is the painting technique of impulsive smirching, spattering and dripping of different colors of paints on canvas. The essential techniques incorporated in figure painting are undercoating or priming, highlighting and shading, blending, layering and feathering, dry brushing, usage of washes, toning, outlining and edging, painting metals and non-metallic metals.
