Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo di ser piero da Vinci, popularly known as Leonardo da Vinci was born at Vinci, a small town in Florence on 15th of April, 1452. Apart from being renowned as a painter, Leonardo da Vinci was noted as an inventor, scientist, sculptor, writer, botanist, engineer, anatomist, architect, poet, mathematician, and musician. The studio of Verrocchio, a well known painter of Florence, was the place where Leonardo da Vinci acquired his education. Milan, Rome, Bologna, Venice and France are the major places where he spent his life. This universal genius has been perhaps the most talented person and painter of all times.

The famous portrait of Mona Lisa and religious painting of The Last Supper are the principle creations of Leonardo da Vinci. Another noted drawing of Leonado da Vinci is the Vitruvian Man.

His unique understanding of painting gave way to unparallel creations, which was rivaled by his contemporary painter, Michelangelo. Almost all this paintings have been appreciated as well as admired by critics. Excellent portray of human expression, gesture, innovative usage of paint, light, texture, contours of human figures, and proper composition are the main points of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. The above mentioned points can be witnessed in his paintings namely the Last Supper, Mona Lisa and the Virgin of the Rocks. With the Baptism of Christ painting he commenced his career in the art field. His painting, Annunciation shows Virgin Mary sitting on the right of the picture and an angel on the left hand side. The humanist portrayal of Mother Mary and the Angel are the highlights of this painting of Leonardo da Vinci.

St. Jerome in the Wilderness, Adoration of the Magi and the Virgin of the Rocks are some of his paintings of 1940s. Virgin of the Rocks painting features Leornado’s interest in nature and portrays a mysterious figure sitting beside the infant Christ. The decade 1490s is the time when The Last Supper painting was completed. One of the most renowned paintings of Leonardo, The Last Supper represents the last meal of Jesus shared with his twelve disciples. The sense of space, perspective, color, lighting and the excellent portrayal of the human figures is what makes this painting stand apart from the rest. With the 1500s decade came the painting of the famous portrayal, Mona Lisa. The subtle smile on the face of this painting is the most significant part of this creation of Leonardo da Vinci.

The Virgin and Child with St. Anne and St. John the Baptist is another popular painting of Leonardo da Vinci. Apart from being a great painter he was also an unmatched draftsman. Studies of several paintings like The Virgin of the Rocks, The Adoration of the Magi, The Last Supper and Landscaoe of the Arno Valley are properly illustrated in his journals. Sketches and detailed drawings of these paintings are portrayed in the journals. Leonardo da Vinci’s proficiency of perceiving human figure is also featured in the sculptures, created by him. He spent his last days in France and died on 2nd May, 1519.
